Dr. Andrew Wright

N-Dimension
CTO

Dr. Wright brings over 20 years of experience in both professional software development and computer science research to N-Dimension. He has developed commercial and open source software, and has published numerous technical research papers in programming languages, formal methods, and computer security. He has focused on cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and industrial control systems for the past 10 years. As N-Dimension Solution’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew directs the company’s technical strategy for cybersecurity products and services for the power grid.

Prior to joining N-Dimension in 2008, he developed best practices for network security for Industrial Control Systems in Cisco’s Critical Infrastructure Assurance Group, and created a network architecture test lab that has since become Cisco’s Smart Grid Demonstration Lab. Andrew was the principal technical architect of AGA-12, a protocol for cryptographically protecting the integrity of SCADA traffic on serial links, and served as vice chair of the standards committee during its transition and approval as the IEEE 1711 standard. He played a founding role in the development of the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). With Daniel Thanos, Wright co-led the development of chapter 7 of NISTIR 7628, Guidelines for Smart Grid Cyber Security.

Andrew has consulted and/or advised INL, GAO, FERC, and NITRD on cybersecurity for the power grid. He is a frequent speaker at various conferences and workshops on cybersecurity for utilities, and teaches a session at the University of Illinois Summer School on Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid. Andrew holds a doctorate in Computer Science from Rice University, and Masters and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Waterloo (Canada). He lives in Austin, Texas, and is an accomplished aerobatic pilot. His wife teaches high school math, engineering, and computer science in the Austin public school system.
